Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the number one occurring cancer in men, with an estimated 184,500 new cases being diagnosed in 1998. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, with an estimated 39,200 deaths occurring in 1998. Given these statistics, the diagnosis of prostate cancer in a man is a sobering one.

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown. There are certain factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. These factors include a high fat diet, a family history of prostate cancer, decreased sun exposure (the incidence of prostate cancer is less in sunny climates), and race (African Americans have a higher incidence of prostate cancer compared with other races). Prostate cancer is usually slow growing, and can start in men as young as in their forties.

The diagnosis of prostate cancer is usually made following the discovery of an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) level. PSA determinations are recommended yearly in all men over the age of 50, and in all men with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer over the age of 40. If an elevated PSA level is found, a prostatic ultrasound and prostate biopsies are performed. If prostate cancer is found, and shown to be clinically localized, it can be cured with either radical surgery, or radiation therapy. Metastatic prostate cancer (prostate cancer that has escaped the confines of the prostate and spread to other parts of the body) can be treated with medications or surgery to put it into remission.

Incontinence
Suffered by both men and women alike, urinary incontinence has many causes. In women, stress incontinence is the most common, but incontinence secondary to sphincter incompetence and bladder overactivity can occur. In men, incontinence is mainly secondary to problems related to the prostate, but can be secondary to bladder overactivity. Pelvic surgery can cause incontinence in both men and women. In many cases, the diagnosis of the type of incontinence is straightforward, but in some cases requires specialized testing. Treatment of incontinence is varied, from behavioral modification, to medication, and to surgery.

The causes of impotence are varied, ranging from medical problems, to psychological problems, to surgical problems. Diagnosis is straightforward, and multiple treatment options are available, including vacuum pumps, medication, and surgery. Bay Area Urology Associates, P.C. is able to treat impotence effectively.
