Prostate Cancer The cause of prostate cancer is unknown. There are certain factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. These factors include a high fat diet, a family history of prostate cancer, decreased sun exposure (the incidence of prostate cancer is less in sunny climates), and race (African Americans have a higher incidence of prostate cancer compared with other races). Prostate cancer is usually slow growing, and can start in men as young as in their forties. The diagnosis of prostate cancer is usually made following
the discovery of an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) level.
PSA determinations are recommended yearly in all men over the age of
50, and in all men with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer
over the age of 40. If an elevated PSA level is found, a prostatic ultrasound
and prostate biopsies are performed. If prostate cancer is found, and
shown to be clinically localized, it can be cured with either radical
surgery, or radiation therapy. Metastatic prostate cancer (prostate
cancer that has escaped the confines of the prostate and spread to other
parts of the body) can be treated with medications or surgery to put
it into remission. Incontinence Impotence
